Boss Encounters in The Blood Moon Rises
Overview
The Blood Moon Rises introduces three major combat encounters tied to the Vampyrium storyline. Two of them — the Wyrd and Lord Drakan — occur during the quest itself and gate progression through Castle Drakan and the final confrontation beneath the blood moon. The third, the Maggot King, is an optional solo boss unlocked after quest completion and represents one of the hardest PvM challenges in Old School RuneScape.
Each fight tests different skills. Wyrd is a demi-boss that teaches movement and resource management before the finale. Lord Drakan is a three-phase encounter built around prayer switching, gear swaps, and reading telegraphed special attacks. The Maggot King strips away team support entirely and demands Inferno-tier execution over a long, punishing fight. Understanding how these encounters connect — and which gear presets work across them — is essential for anyone pushing through the quest or farming post-quest rewards.
This hub page summarises every boss in the update. Use the dedicated guides below for phase breakdowns, recommended inventories, and common failure points.
Quest Bosses
During The Blood Moon Rises you face two scripted bosses. Neither can be skipped, and both require completing prerequisite quest steps in Castle Drakan and the Blood Hunt sequence.
The Wyrd appears as a demi-boss shortly before the final act. It is not a casual gear check — players who underestimate its enrage mechanics or bleed stacking often burn supplies before reaching Drakan. Treat Wyrd as a dress rehearsal: if your prayer flicks and food timing are shaky here, the Lord Drakan fight will punish those mistakes harder.
Lord Drakan is the quest finale and the most mechanically demanding mandatory boss in the update. The encounter spans three distinct phases, each with its own attack styles and prayer requirements. Phase transitions are not safe — Drakan continues attacking through most cutscenes — so learning where you can drink potions and where you must keep clicking is part of mastering the fight. See the Drakan fight build guide for loadout recommendations.
Post-Quest: Maggot King
After completing The Blood Moon Rises, players gain access to the Maggot King's lair in the depths of Vampyrium. This is a solo-only instanced boss with no team scaling. Difficulty is broadly comparable to the Inferno: one wrong prayer switch or mis-timed movement can end a kill attempt that already consumed twenty minutes of supplies.
The Maggot King drops unique items documented on the Maggot King drops page, including components used with Seeker arrows and high-tier melee off-hands. Because the fight is post-quest and optional, many players finish the storyline first, train or upgrade gear, then return with a dedicated Maggot King build.
Unlike Lord Drakan, the Maggot King does not require prayer switching between multiple styles in every phase — but it compensates with longer damage rotations, add spawns, and arena hazards that demand constant repositioning. Plan for extended trips and multiple learning attempts.
General Preparation
All three bosses benefit from high combat stats — at minimum 90+ in your chosen combat style, with 77 Prayer for Rigour, Augury, or Piety strongly recommended for Drakan and the Maggot King. Bring super combat or ranging potions, saradomin brews, and super restores; the Wyrd fight is lighter, but Drakan and the Maggot King expect full supply racks.
Quest bosses allow standard death mechanics within the quest instance. The Maggot King follows hardcore PvM rules: dying sends you out of the instance and you must restart from the beginning. Verify your skill requirements and quest chain before attempting any encounter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which boss is hardest in The Blood Moon Rises?
The Maggot King is the hardest overall — a solo, post-quest fight at Inferno-tier difficulty. Lord Drakan is the hardest mandatory quest boss due to three-phase prayer switching. Wyrd is the easiest of the three but still dangerous if you enter underprepared.
Can I fight the Maggot King before finishing the quest?
No. The Maggot King unlocks only after completing The Blood Moon Rises. Wyrd and Lord Drakan are encountered during the quest and cannot be repeated as standard boss instances until post-quest content rules apply.
Do I need a team for any of these bosses?
All three encounters are designed for solo play. The Maggot King is explicitly solo-only. Wyrd and Lord Drakan are quest instances that do not support team scaling or co-op assistance.
What gear should I use for all three fights?
Melee with scythe or whip variants works well for Wyrd. Lord Drakan often requires hybrid setups or quick gear swaps between phases — see the Drakan fight build guide. The Maggot King has its own optimal loadout depending on whether you prioritise learning or fast kill times.
Are boss kills required for quest completion?
Wyrd and Lord Drakan must be defeated to finish the quest. The Maggot King is optional post-quest content and does not block any quest reward or area unlock beyond its own drop table.
